Applying to be a tutor Meet Matt, Matt is a third year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Manchester and one of the latest additions to the Tutor Trust team. We’re going to be checking in with Matt in lots of different ways over the course of his first year with us – from blogs to vlogs and everything in between – following him through his interview, training, and of course those all-important first assignments! We hope that Matt’s experiences will show new tutors and applicants just how exciting it is to work for Tutor Trust. … Matt found Tutor Trust thanks to his university’s jobs site, and straight away he thought that his experience volunteering in schools would be useful for the role. Before jumping in, Matt had a quick look around online: “I researched Tutor Trust and was impressed by their commitment to reducing inequality in education. I was excited to apply for a job where I would make a real difference to people’s lives!” Having helped children read in local primary schools and working as a PASS leader for his course, Matt decided to apply to tutor Secondary Maths with us – but he’d also like to tutor Science in the future. “I wanted to make sure I would fit well with their ethos”, says Matt, and he’s right – working for The Tutor Trust is unlike many part time jobs in that the main rewards for your work go far beyond the financial. While Matt’s experience makes him an ideal tutor, it’s worth keeping in mind that what The Tutor Trust look for more than anything else is a commitment to our aims and a desire to deliver amazing sessions! And it isn’t essential that you want to go into teaching. Matt plans to do a MA in Renewable Energy & Clean Technology, but his application will be all the stronger thanks to the communication skills he’ll develop with The Tutor Trust. Although he found the application thorough, Matt was surprised by how quickly Tutor Trust got back to him – they were very flexible when it came to choosing a slot for the online interview. “Before the interview I was nervous but also excited as this was exactly the part-time job I was looking for!” says Matt. You’ll have to wait until we next catch up with Matt to find out exactly how his interview went, but needless to say he did well enough to secure a job with The Tutor Trust, and we’re thrilled that he’s part of the team. Good luck Matt! If you're interested in becoming a tutor, you can apply here. Date of publication: 01/10/2020 Manage Cookie Preferences
