ALL TUITION SUBSIDIES NOW GO DIRECT TO SCHOOLS Following another record year of tutoring delivery in 2021/22, we are proud to be a Tuition Partner within the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) for the third year running. For the 2022/23 academic year, all NTP funding will go directly to schools. If schools want to work with an external tutoring organisation, they will need to use an NTP Tuition Partner as those tutoring organisations have been quality assured by the Department for Education (DfE). Under the NTP, schools will receive £162 for all their pupils who are eligible for Pupil Premium (the figure is £423 per pupil for non-mainstream schools such as Alternative Provision settings, Special Schools and Hospital Schools). The NTP funding is intended to cover 60% of the cost of tutoring up to a maximum hourly rate per pupil of £18 (or £47 for non-mainstream schools) and, although the funding is based on the number of pupils in a school who are eligible for Pupil Premium, it does not have to be used exclusively to support pupils receiving this funding. Schools can provide more tutoring than their NTP subsidy covers if they want to by using other funding they have available. The full DfE guidance for school about the National Tutoring Programme for 2022/23 is available here. Tutor Trust is a proudly Northern education charity with a mission to ‘transform lives through tutoring.’ We work exclusively with state schools across Greater Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and Merseyside, and our focus is on helping disadvantaged pupils and vulnerable learners to fulfil their potential. Founded in Manchester in 2011, we have a very strong evidence base for the quality and impact of our work across the North of England. Tutor Trust is unique in the UK education sector in having successful results from not one, but TWO, successful Education Endowment Foundation (EEF)-funded randomised control trials. The first, published in 2018, gave us gold standard evidence of the impact of 12 hours of tuition on learning. The second, published in June 2022, proved the importance of the tutor-tutee relationship in improving the attendance of the tutee. We are also an elite ‘Promising Project’ of the Education Endowment Foundation (and the only one based in the North of England). When he was the CEO of the Education Endowment Foundation, Sir Kevan Collins – who went on to become the Government’s ‘Education Recovery Commissioner’ – said this about Tutor Trust: The evidence is clear that high-quality tutoring can boost the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and is a good use of schools' pupil premium funding. The EEF has designated Tutor Trust one of our Promising Projects because they demonstrated positive and cost-effective impact when we put them through the tough test of a randomised controlled trial. We're happy to recommend them to schools and to support their growth plan in the North of England.” The rigorous quality assurance of our work is led by our Quality and Impact Team, and the Tutor Trust team includes 14 qualified teachers (three of them former Headteachers). Tutor Trust has a 10-year track record of both growth and continuous improvement in its services; you can read our latest Impact Report and some short case studies of our work with schools. WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOUR SCHOOL Tutoring for Y3-6 in Primary, and for Y7-11 in Secondary Specialist 1:1 tutoring service for Cared for Children, pupils in Alternative Provision and pupils at risk of exclusion Maths, English or Science (Science is for Secondary pupils only) Tutoring will be delivered in blocks of 15 hours in one subject Tutoring can be face-to-face in school or online, and the online tutoring can be when the pupil is at home or in school (although face-to-face tutoring is strongly encouraged as the evidence shows it is far more effective than online) Most tutoring will be delivered in small groups on a 1:3 tutor to pupil ratio (tutoring can be 1:1 if it is for vulnerable learners such as LAC pupils or pupils in Alternative Provision). In line with our goals as a charity, we request that 75% of the cohort either receive Pupil Premium, are Cared for Children, or are in Alternative Provision or at risk of exclusion. We can be more flexible with this requirement for schools primarily serving low-income communities. If you have any immediate questions, please consult our Frequently Asked Questions. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ GCSE INTENSIVES - EASTER CLUBS FOR KEY STAGE 4 PUPILS Our flexible in-school GCSE Intensive Easter Clubs offer bespoke, individualised support for pupils in Maths, English, or Science, or any combination of the three. We offer flexible delivery of the tutoring blocks – one hour per week over 15 weeks, or two one-hour sessions per week in a seven-and-a-half week intensive programme. Tutoring is delivered face-to-face in school. Most of the costs are met by NTP funding – meaning they can be as low as £7.20 per pupil, per hour’s tutoring. You can read more here, or contact [email protected] to find out more details. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ OUR CHARGES TO SCHOOLS As a charity, Tutor Trust has always charged a low cost to schools for our services. Using the NTP subsidies means the costs for schools are even lower. Schools can use their Pupil Premium budget to cover their contributions to tuition costs, or to fund additional tuition over the level of the NTP subsidies they receive. Tutor Trust will deliver most tutoring in small groups, with one tutor working with 3 pupils at a time (whether face-to-face or online). This 1:3 ratio is the most cost-effective model for schools. Using the NTP subsidies for tutoring on a 1:3 ratio, a block of 15 hours of tutoring in either Maths, English or Science will cost schools just £108 per pupil for the full programme. How it works in mainstream schools: The DfE gives mainstream schools £162 per Pupil Premium-eligible pupil. We charge £54 per hour of tuition delivered (£18 per hour per pupil if there are 3 pupils in the group). The NTP subsidy covers 60% of the cost, up to a maximum of £10.80 per pupil per hour. For example, for 15 hours of tuition for 15 pupils in groups of 3, we will charge the school £4,050, which costs the school only £1,620 after using the NTP subsidy. How it works in non-mainstream schools: The DfE gives non-mainstream schools £423 per Pupil Premium-eligible pupil. We charge £40 per hour of tuition delivered on a one-to-one basis. The NTP subsidy covers 60% of the cost, up to a maximum of £28.20 per pupil per hour. For example, for 15 hours of tuition for one pupil, we will charge the school £600, which costs the school only £240 after using the NTP subsidy. Below are the full details of the costs for mainstream schools: What schools will be invoiced Cost to school after using 60% NTP subsidy Secondary School Block of Tutoring (15 pupils for 15 hours in one subject) 1:3 £4,050 £1,620 (£108 per pupil) 1:2 (14 pupils) £5,670 £3,402 (£243 per pupil) 1 1:1 (per pupil) £810 £648 per pupil 1 Primary School Block of Tutoring (12 pupils for 15 hours in one subject) 1:3 £3,240 £1,296 (£108 per pupil) 1:2 £4,860 £2,916 (£243 per pupil) 1 1:1 (per pupil) £810 £648 per pupil 1 1 The funding is capped at £10.80 per hour per pupil in a mainstream school. As the tuition cost is £54 per hour, on a 1:1 and 1:2 basis the 60% subsidy does not apply to the full cost with only the first £18 per hour per pupil being subsidised.
