Expand We work with schools in all boroughs of the Greater Manchester, Leeds-Bradford, and Merseyside city regions, so we ask that you should be prepared to travel up to an hour within your city region to get to a tutoring assignment. Assignments that require a longer-than-usual commute may have an uplift in pay to reflect this. Once you've completed tutor training, you'll be able to access details of tutoring assignments by location and day/time so you can decide which tutoring work you'd be able to take on depending on your schedule, existing commitments, and location.
When does tutoring take place? Can I choose my hours? Most tutoring takes place during the school day (8am – 4pm) inside the school building, and during school term times. Expand Most tutoring takes place during the school day (8am – 4pm) inside the school building, and during school term times. Once you’re fully trained, you’ll access details of available assignments through our online booking system, which shows the date, time, pay rate and length of an assignment. You can apply for as many assignments as you wish, but consider that a tutoring assignment is typically 15 school weeks in length. We follow the term timetable of schools, and so tuition can sometimes run one or two weeks into the university holidays. Therefore, please check your availability before applying for an assignment. The amount of available work varies depending on the time of year and the demand from schools and we cannot guarantee that work at a particular time/in a particular area will be available.

You can find out available vacancies and apply here. If you're a qualified teacher interested in becoming a tutor, then read our dedicated page for you here.
Can I work for The Tutor Trust if I have a student visa? Our tutors must be able to register as self-employed. Unfortunately, Tier 4 and Student Visas don't allow for this. Expand As our tutors work with us on a self-employed basis, you must be able to register as self-employed in the UK before applying to tutor with us. Individuals on Tier 4 or Student Visas cannot register for self-employment so, unfortunately, will be unable to join us. We apologise in advance for any disappointment this causes. You can find out more and register as self-employed through the HMRC website. If you still have questions about your eligibility to tutor with us, email us with relevant documents to: [email protected].
Am I able to tutor online? Most tutoring work is in-person so you need to be available and willing to work face-to-face before applying. Expand Although we extended our support to include online tuition for pupils who needed it the most during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have now returned to in-person tuition for the majority of sessions, as this has been proven to have the greatest impact on the attainment of the young people we work with. There may be some opportunities to tutor online, but please note that this will be limited, therefore very competitive, and we cannot guarantee the availability of any online work. This means that our tutors should be based in either one of our three city regions: Greater Manchester, Leeds-Bradford, or Merseyside, and be willing to tutor in person.
Which subjects can I tutor in? Primary (Maths and Reading), Secondary Maths, Secondary English, Secondary Science. Expand We offer tuition in the following subjects: Primary (Maths and Reading) Secondary Maths Secondary English Secondary Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) For Primary School tutoring, you’ll be working mostly with Year 5 and Year 6 students, although we work with Years 3-6. As part of our Tutoring Plus programme, we also work with pupils with additional support needs, including those in Alternative Provision settings or Looked After Children (LAC).
Can I apply to tutor in more than one subject? Expand We ask that you begin by applying for just one subject (either Primary, Secondary Maths, Secondary English, or Secondary Science). Plus: A one-off bonus of £20 for tutors when they complete their first tuition session of 2022/2023. A one-off bonus of £100 for all tutors who complete at least 30 hours of tutoring this academic year. We pay our tutors on the 15th of every month. Your pay will reflect all the work you did in the previous month e.g., on the 15th October, you will be paid for all the work you did in September. Although we don’t cover travel expenses, we may offer an increased rate of pay for assignments that require a longer-than-usual commute. Grades from international qualifications can be transposed by checking the following University of Brighton webpage: www.brighton.ac.uk/international/study-with-us/your-country-info/index.aspx. If you attended school before the advent of GCSEs, please enter your O-level grades in the ‘Education Details section of the application.’ For any questions about grade requirements, please email us at: [email protected].
Who would I be tutoring? Expand As a tutor, most of the pupils you will work with would have not otherwise had access to tuition. These pupils might not be making their expected progress, or they may require an extra push to achieve their full potential. Unlike private tutors, we work directly with schools rather than parents and so tutoring typically takes place at these schools during the day. For Primary School tutoring, you’ll be working mostly with Year 5 and Year 6 students, although we work with Years 3-6. For Secondary School tutoring, you’ll be working mainly with Year 10 and Year 11 students studying for their GCSEs, but we work with Years 7-11. Tuition sessions are in small groups of one-to-one or one-to-three.
What personal documents do I need for the interview? Expand At your interview, we would like you to provide: Original copies of your GCSE English and Maths certificates. How long after I complete my training will I be able to start tutoring? As soon as we've heard back from your referees and you've completed all DBS checks. Expand Our team will work with you to help you begin tutoring as soon as possible. As well as completing your training, this is dependent on our recruitment checks being carried out successfully. Please keep an eye out for emails from [email protected]t.org that detail what we need you to do to help with this. Before you can start tutoring, you will need to have completed each stage of the training programme, your DBS check will need to be processed, and your two references will need to be received. Tutor DBS checks are carried out by a third party, and the time it takes for them to be completed can vary and is out of our control. We will endeavour to add you to Connect, our tutor portal, within a few days of completing your core tutor training so that you can begin applying for tuition assignments.
What happens if I can't attend one of the live sessions? Please get in touch: [email protected] Expand If you are unable to attend a live session for any reason, please contact [email protected] as soon as possible. You will be added to the next round of training, so you will still be able to complete your training journey, but it will just take a little longer. And as each section of our training builds upon the previous one, you will need to attend each live session in order to progress to the next stage e.g. you can only attend the Block 4 live session once you have attended the Block 2 and Block 3 live sessions. Check out the dates of our upcoming training sessions here.
Do I have to pay for training? No, all our learning opportunities are free! Expand No, all our learning opportunities are free! Expand At Tutor Trust, we want you to succeed. Our aim is to provide expert training and support all our tutors to feel confident to plan and deliver high-quality tuition. You will have a range of opportunities to show how well you meet our competencies, and we will give you lots of support throughout training to meet them. However, if you, or we, feel the competencies are not being met, we will speak to you before agreeing any next steps. And if I miss a deadline? There will be several deadlines for tasks throughout your training. They are in place to ensure you have covered all the pre-requisite content and are prepared for the interactive live sessions where you are expected to contribute to discussions. We will clearly communicate any deadlines to you at several points throughout training, so please be sure to make note of them. It is important you meet these deadlines so that arrangements can be made for the live sessions. If you are unable to meet a deadline for any reason, please contact [email protected] as soon as possible so that next steps can be discussed.
Do I have to complete training? Yes. Our high-quality training programme is vital for you to be the best tutor possible. Expand Yes. Our high-quality training programme is vital for you to be the best tutor possible. As you progress along your training journey, you’ll learn about how students learn, how to plan and deliver engaging sessions, and safeguarding procedures. Of course, we’ll give you all the support you need along the way.
I'm a qualified teacher. Can I apply to tutor? Expand We very much welcome applications from qualified teachers and others with experience of working with children and young people and ask you to make this evident in your application form. Please note that, if you have completed a teacher training qualification, we offer a fast-track training programme.
Can I apply for more than one vacancy? Expand We ask that tutors begin by applying for just one vacancy (either Primary, Secondary Maths, Secondary English or Secondary Science). You will have the opportunity in your interview to express interest in training in other subjects – as long as you pass the relevant subject knowledge test and attend the relevant training, you will be able to tutor in more than one subject later on.
Who can I use as a referee? Expand We ask for one academic referee (a tutor, teacher, lecturer) and one personal referee (not including a family member, or a peer). If the person you have put down as a referee has not confirmed that they can provide this before you submit your application, don't worry. If you need to change your referee at a later date you can do so by emailing [email protected].
Do I need teaching/tutoring experience? Expand You do not need to have teaching or tutoring experience to be a tutor with us, however if you do have any such experience please highlight this in your application.
I'm not a student. Am I eligible to apply? Expand We welcome applications from all people who meet our academic criteria, whether or not you are a student. Our tutor cohort is diverse and we very much welcome applications from people of all ages and professional backgrounds.
Can I work for The Tutor Trust if I have a Tier 4 visa? Expand Unfortunately, tutors must have a Tier 1 visa to be eligible to work for us. This is because you must be able to register as self-employed with HMRC, which Tier 4 visas do not allow for. Students visiting from countries outside of the EU will have a Tier 4 visa and should therefore not apply to be a tutor. We apologise in advance for any disappointment this causes.
What qualifications do I need? Do you accept international qualifications? What if I have not sat GCSEs? Expand To be a Primary tutor we require you to have a minimum of two Bs/6s in Maths AND English GCSE. To be a Secondary tutor you must have an A/7 or above at GCSE in the subject you wish to tutor. These grades are essential – so, if you are successful in your application you will need to bring your GCSE certificates to interview as evidence of having achieved these grades. If you did not go to school in the UK, we do accept international equivalents, so please continue with the application and fill out your qualifications in the Education Details section. Grades from international qualifications can be transposed by checking the following University of Brighton webpage: www.brighton.ac.uk/international/study-with-us/your-country-info/index.aspx. If you attended school before the advent of GCSEs, please enter your O-level grades in the Education Details section of the application.
How far will I have to travel? Expand This depends on which school(s) you work with - some are right next to universities, but this work tends to be taken up very quickly. The average travel time to assignments is around an hour on public transport from student areas. Assignments which are further away tend to be for longer blocks of time so that tutors’ journeys are worth it.
Will I need to work during University holidays? Expand We follow the term timetable of schools, and so tuition can sometimes run 1 or 2 weeks into University holidays. When you sign up to assignments, you will know how many weeks they require you to tutor and you will have to be available for EVERY week listed – please do not take on an assignment that you know in advance you cannot complete, as this is unfair on the children you will be tutoring.
Documents for interview Expand Please provide TWO forms of identification (e.g. passport, driving licence), as well as a proof of address and your original GCSE certificates. As interviews are conducted online, you will need to show these documents via webcam at the beginning of the interview. If you do not have all these documents at the time of your interview do not worry - if you are successful, you will be able to bring them later to training or our office. However, your DBS will take longer to process so we advise you provide them as soon as possible.
What if I can’t attend one of the training dates? Expand Our training in 2021-22 will take place online, with a new cohort training each month, often pausing in late spring/summer. It will be a mixture of self-directed study over our online platform and three interactive group sessions. The group sessions are compulsory, and if you are unable to attend all of them during your allocated month you will have to wait until the following month to complete your training. If that month's session fills to capacity, we will be unable to offer places to candidates from previous training rounds, so it is advisable to check you can make all training group sessions in the month when you apply. If you have questions about this, please email [email protected]
When will the work take place? Can I choose my hours? Expand You are not given shifts as a tutor. We send out tuition assignments to tutors as they become available - this will include details of the time and day of the tuition, the pay rate and how long the assignment will run for. Tutors can apply for as many tuition assignments as they wish, but we expect tutors to have checked that they can commit to the entire run of an assignment before applying. The amount of available work varies depending on the time of year and the demand from schools and we cannot guarantee that work at a particular time/in a particular area will be available.
Can I choose to deliver tuition online? Expand Although we extended our support to include online tuition for pupils who needed it the most during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have now returned to in-person tuition for the majority of sessions, as this has been proven to have the greatest impact on the attainment of the young people we work with. This means that our tutors should be based in either one of our three city regions: Greater Manchester, Leeds-Bradford or Merseyside, and be willing to tutor face-to-face. You can apply to become a tutor if you’re a university student, or a professional looking for a flexible, part-time role, based or living in one of these city regions during term time, as most of our work coincides with the term times of the local schools. There may be some opportunities to tutor online, as well as face-to-face, but please note that this will be limited, therefore very competitive, and we cannot guarantee the availability of any online work.
