Who would I be tutoring, and where does tuition take place? Expand As a tutor, you will often work with pupils who would otherwise not have access to tuition and who are either not making their expected progress or who require an extra push to achieve even more. Unlike private tutors, we work directly with schools rather than parents and tutoring typically takes place at these schools during the day. For Primary School tutoring you will be working with Year 5 and Year 6 students. For Secondary School tutoring you will be working with all ages, but the majority of the tutoring is for students studying for their GCSEs. You will work either 1:1 with the students or with groups of up to three students. We work across the Greater Manchester, Leeds-Bradford and Merseyside city regions, so our tutors must be prepared to travel for as much as an hour to get to their assignments. Normally, tutoring sessions take place face-to-face in the student's school and during the school day.
About my pay… Expand We pay our tutors in arrears on the 15th of every month. This means your pay will reflect all the work you did in the previous month e.g. on the 15th October, you will be paid for all the work you did in September. We pay our tutors a minimum of £21 (£24 or £28.50 for Qualified Teachers, dependent on experience) to plan and deliver a session. This means that: Each tutor receives a minimum of £315 (£360 or £427.50 for QTs, dependent on experience) for every standard assignment of 15 hours. This applies to all face-to-face and online sessions. We also offer: A one-off bonus of £20 for tutors when they complete their first tuition session of 2022/2023. A one-off bonus of £100 for all tutors who complete at least 30 hours of tutoring this academic year (equivalent to two completed assignments of 15 sessions each). Tutor Trust will be responsible for processing your pay. We do not cover travel expenses for our tutors, however if you take on an assignment that requires commuting longer than usual, this will be reflected in the rate of pay. When you become a Tutor Trust tutor you register as self-employed, which must be done on the HMRC website.
Which subjects do you offer tuition in? Expand In Primary, we recruit tutors who are able to deliver both tuition in Maths, Reading and Writing to pupils in Years 3 to 6. At Secondary, we offer Maths, English Language, English Literature and Science tutoring. We also work in Alternative Provision, and have a specific vacancy to recruit tutors with a particular interest in this more specialised work.
Can I choose to deliver tuition online? Expand Although we extended our support to include online tuition for pupils who needed it the most during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have now returned to in-person tuition for the majority of sessions, as this has been proven to have the greatest impact on the attainment of the young people we work with. This means that our tutors should be based in either one of our three city regions: Greater Manchester, Leeds-Bradford or Merseyside, and be willing to tutor face-to-face. You can apply to become a tutor if you’re a university student, or a professional looking for a flexible, part-time role, based or living in one of these city regions during term time, as most of our work coincides with the term times of the local schools. There may be some opportunities to tutor online, as well as face-to-face, but please note that this will be limited, therefore very competitive, and we cannot guarantee the availability of any online work.
When will the work take place? Can I choose my hours? Expand You are not given shifts as a tutor. We send out tuition assignments to tutors as they become available - this will include details of the time and day of the tuition, the pay rate and how long the assignment will run for. Tutors can apply for as many tuition assignments as they wish, but we expect tutors to have checked that they can commit to the entire run of an assignment before applying. The amount of available work varies depending on the time of year and the demand from schools and we cannot guarantee that work at a particular time/in a particular area will be available.
What if I can’t attend one of the training dates? Expand Our training in 2021-22 will take place online, with a new cohort training each month, often pausing in late spring/summer. It will be a mixture of self-directed study over our online platform and three interactive group sessions. The group sessions are compulsory, and if you are unable to attend all of them during your allocated month you will have to wait until the following month to complete your training. If that month's session fills to capacity, we will be unable to offer places to candidates from previous training rounds, so it is advisable to check you can make all training group sessions in the month when you apply. If you have questions about this, please email [email protected]
Documents for interview Expand Please provide TWO forms of identification (e.g. passport, driving licence), as well as a proof of address and your original GCSE certificates. As interviews are conducted online, you will need to show these documents via webcam at the beginning of the interview. If you do not have all these documents at the time of your interview do not worry - if you are successful, you will be able to bring them later to training or our office. However, your DBS will take longer to process so we advise you provide them as soon as possible.
Will I need to work during University holidays? Expand We follow the term timetable of schools, and so tuition can sometimes run 1 or 2 weeks into University holidays. When you sign up to assignments, you will know how many weeks they require you to tutor and you will have to be available for EVERY week listed – please do not take on an assignment that you know in advance you cannot complete, as this is unfair on the children you will be tutoring.
How far will I have to travel? Expand This depends on which school(s) you work with - some are right next to universities, but this work tends to be taken up very quickly. The average travel time to assignments is around an hour on public transport from student areas. Assignments which are further away tend to be for longer blocks of time so that tutors’ journeys are worth it.
What qualifications do I need? Do you accept international qualifications? What if I have not sat GCSEs? Expand To be a Primary tutor we require you to have a minimum of two Bs/6s in Maths AND English GCSE. To be a Secondary tutor you must have an A/7 or above at GCSE in the subject you wish to tutor. These grades are essential – so, if you are successful in your application you will need to bring your GCSE certificates to interview as evidence of having achieved these grades. If you did not go to school in the UK, we do accept international equivalents, so please continue with the application and fill out your qualifications in the Education Details section. Grades from international qualifications can be transposed by checking the following University of Brighton webpage: www.brighton.ac.uk/international/study-with-us/your-country-info/index.aspx. If you attended school before the advent of GCSEs, please enter your O-level grades in the Education Details section of the application.
Can I work for The Tutor Trust if I have a Tier 4 visa? Expand Unfortunately, tutors must have a Tier 1 visa to be eligible to work for us. This is because you must be able to register as self-employed with HMRC, which Tier 4 visas do not allow for. Students visiting from countries outside of the EU will have a Tier 4 visa and should therefore not apply to be a tutor. We apologise in advance for any disappointment this causes.
I'm not a student. Am I eligible to apply? Expand We welcome applications from all people who meet our academic criteria, whether or not you are a student. Our tutor cohort is diverse and we very much welcome applications from people of all ages and professional backgrounds.
Do I need teaching/tutoring experience? Expand You do not need to have teaching or tutoring experience to be a tutor with us, however if you do have any such experience please highlight this in your application.
Who can I use as a referee? Expand We ask for one academic referee (a tutor, teacher, lecturer) and one personal referee (not including a family member, or a peer). If the person you have put down as a referee has not confirmed that they can provide this before you submit your application, don't worry. If you need to change your referee at a later date you can do so by emailing [email protected].
Can I apply for more than one vacancy? Expand We ask that tutors begin by applying for just one vacancy (either Primary, Secondary Maths, Secondary English or Secondary Science). You will have the opportunity in your interview to express interest in training in other subjects – as long as you pass the relevant subject knowledge test and attend the relevant training, you will be able to tutor in more than one subject later on.
I'm a qualified teacher. Can I apply to tutor? Expand We very much welcome applications from qualified teachers and others with experience of working with children and young people and ask you to make this evident in your application form. Please note that, if you have completed a teacher training qualification, we offer a fast-track training programme.
