Co-op Academy Nightingale, Leeds

At Co-op Academy Nightingale in Leeds, pupils' dedication to their studies during tuition paid off in their SATs results.

My favourite moment was when we did fractions because I didn’t know how to do fractions until tutoring.”

Co-op Academy Nightingale, in Harehills, Leeds, partnered with Tutor Trust for the first time in 2020/2021, and we have worked together every year since.

About our partner school

The school, in the heart of a multi-cultural community, brings together children from around the world. The school values its pupils’ wide-ranging cultural experiences and sees these as a great resource. Pupils speak many different languages, and the school puts language, literature, and vocabulary at the centre of the curriculum.

The school was rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted at the last inspection in June 2022.

Our collaboration

Over the last three years, we have supported 98 Year 5 and 6 pupils in Reading and Maths at Co-op Academy Nightingale. In 2022/2023 we worked with 24 Year 6 pupils in both subjects, supporting them in advance of their SATs.

And we’re delighted that the pupils’ hard work paid off!  All pupils made progress between their mock SATs and the exams. The 12 Year 6 pupils tutored in Maths, made an average of 12.5 percentage points of progress. The 12 pupils who worked on their Reading made an average of 10.3 percentage points of progress. Almost all the pupils had between 11 and 15 hours of tuition in each of the subjects, with attendance at 89%.  Several of the pupils attended sessions in both Maths and English.

The pupils were enthusiastic and shared how they enjoyed tuition, rating it an average of 8.2 out of 10 in five key areas, including feeling they had made progress.

Qualified teacher Lucy (pictured above) started tutoring joined us in July 2022 and worked at both Hawksworth Wood Primary School and Co-op Academy Nightingale in 2022/2023.

Lucy completed her teacher training through the Teach First Leadership Development Programme and holds a PGDE from Birmingham City University. She also has a first-class degree in BA English Literature from the University of Leeds and has also studied for an MA English Literature at the University of Leeds.

Lucy is passionate about social mobility and says she believes education is key to transforming life outcomes. Lucy taught for two years before joining Tutor Trust.

It's been a different experience to being a class teacher, and it's been lovely to get to know and support pupils in a small group setting. I think working with small groups has a massive impact. Not only am I able to pick up on tutees' strengths and weaknesses quickly, I am able to build better relationships with them."

In 2023/2024

Our tutors are currently working with 28 pupils in Year 6 who are focusing on Maths and Reading.

Tutor Francesca Culley tutored pupils in Reading at the school in January this year. Francesca acknowledges the impact the pandemic had on her studies and wants to give something back.

“As a student during the pandemic, I know how much of an impact it had on my studies, and knowing the further effects on younger people is a concern and I want to help. Being able to give young people extra help to succeed in their studies and progress into the next level of education is important to me.”
