  2. How to apply

How to apply

Thanks for your interest in becoming a tutor with The Tutor Trust! We have had an overwhelming response to our recruitment campaign so we have paused recruitment until later in the summer when we will be looking for new tutors. Keep an eye out on our social media and this page for further information!

If you'd like to be emailed when we open applications for the next recruitment round, please register your interest here.

Please email [email protected] if you have any questions about our application process.

At Tutor Trust we want to recruit the very best tutors to support our tutees, so we have a limited number of slots for interviews and even fewer places on our programme of training. Due to the high numbers of applications, we offer places as soon as we have the right candidates. If successful, you should be ready to tutor with us within three weeks – providing your references and enhanced DBS check have been returned.

If you are a Qualified Teacher (QT) and are successful at interview, we will offer you a fast-track training programme, so you can be tutoring in the classroom within a few days!

Stage 1 - Online application form

Expand

The application form begins by asking for personal details, qualifications and experience. Please note, you need to be eligible to register as self-employed in the UK in order to be able to apply to tutor with us.  Therefore, if you are on a Tier 4 student visa, you will not be able to tutor with us as you cannot register as self-employed.

We look for specific competencies throughout our application process, which we ask you to demonstrate in the form. We also ask you to provide a short personal statement and two referees (one academic and one personal). We would like you to tell us about your experiences such as paid work, extracurricular activities and/or volunteering. No previous tutoring/ teaching experience is required. However, if you do have experience with children or young people, please ensure you highlight this on your application form.

Double-check your contact details and spelling throughout. Additionally, we would always advise you to save your application regularly to prevent you from losing your work.

You can watch videos from two new tutors, Matt and Madeehah, who have been interviewed about their application process here and here.

Stage 2- Interview

Expand

If your application is successful, we will send you an email invitation to interview. We interview for new tutors roughly once a month. The interview will last no longer than 20 minutes and is conducted by two members of the Tutor Trust staff. The interview consists of three formal questions and then you will be expected to deliver a pre-prepared five-minute lesson. The five-minute lesson will be planned around a question that we will send you a few days before your interview.

You will also need to provide two forms of identification (e.g. passport and driver's licence), as well as a proof of address (e.g. bank statement) issued in the last three months. This is important documentation that we need to see before we apply for your DBS check. We will also ask you to send images of your GCSE (or equivalent) certificates to us via email.

Interviews may be carried out online or face-to-face, subject to government restrictions – we’ll let you know in advance.

Stage 3- Training

Expand

All successful candidates will need to attend 10 hours of training before they are able to start tutoring.  Training is led by qualified teacher trainers who will thoroughly brief you on the national curriculum and equip you with the skills you will need to plan engaging tuition sessions.

Training may be carried out online or face-to-face, subject to government restrictions. Online training consists of tasks to be completed remotely, as well as live sessions held over Zoom. This will be communicated to you if you are invited to the training stage.

You can find out more about the training we offer here.

Stage 4 - References and DBS Checks

Expand

In line with our safer recruitment policies, we need to receive both the references that you provided on your application form before you can tutor in schools. Please make sure that you have emailed us your DBS documents and that you have contacted your referees to let them know they should be hearing from us soon. We will apply and pay for your DBS after you have completed training, and it is essential that you have a DBS before you can begin tutoring.

Stage 5 - Congratulations - you're now a tutor!

Expand

Once you have completed your training, you have your DBS and we have received both of your references, you can start to make a difference as a tutor with The Tutor Trust!

We will send you an email with your login details for our online assignment booking system, Connect. We’ll show you how to use the system so that you can sign up for your first assignment and then it’s over to you! We advertise all of our assignments on Connect, including all the details you need – where the school is, what the pay is, and when it will take place.
