Tutor with Tutor Trust

If you’re highly motivated and passionate about wanting to make a difference to the lives of young people, you’ve come to the right place. Training to become a tutor with us is really rewarding; we’ll also support your professional development along the way and pay you generously for your hard work.

Register your interest

Note: Qualified Teachers should visit our dedicated qualified teachers page. If you're a teacher, you can still join us over the summer period.

The role:

  • Support young people, who may not otherwise have access to a tutor, in core subjects at Primary and/or Secondary level.
  • Work with small groups of one-to-one, or one-to-three, focusing on individual needs and gaps in learning.
  • Tutoring with us is flexible work, but we ask that you commit to a minimum of three hours of tuition per week. Most tutoring takes place during the school day (8am – 4pm) inside the school building, and during school term times.
  • Teaching experience is not required as we’ll train you and support you throughout your time with us, but if you’re a Qualified Teacher, we have a bespoke QT programme for you to join us.
  • You need to be eligible to register as self-employed and be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS and references check before you start tutoring with us.

Take a glimpse of what we're about, and hear from some of our tutors, tutees, and stakeholders in the below video:

Benefits of tutoring

  • Earn £21 minimum to plan and deliver each hour of tuition.*

  • A one-off bonus of £20 when you complete your first tuition session of the academic year (2022/23).

  • A one-off bonus of £100 when you complete at least 30 hours of tutoring this academic year (equivalent to two completed assignments of 15 hour sessions each).

  • Flexible working hours so you can earn some money on the side while at university, or turn tutoring into a more full-time source of income.

  • Fulfilment from working with a charity and supporting young people in your local community.

  • Develop professional skills throughout your time with us, that you can apply in whatever career path you choose.

*We pay our tutors a minimum of £21 (£24 or £28.50 for Qualified Teachers, dependent on experience) to plan and deliver a session. This means that tutors will receive a minimum of £315 (£360 or £427.50 for QTs, dependent on experience) for every standard assignment of 15 hours. This applies to all face-to-face and online sessions. Our one-off bonus incentives apply for the academic year 2022/23 only.

What we’re looking for

As a tutor, you’ll work with the same group of young people every week at the same time, over the course of an assignment (normally 15 school weeks). We expect you to show sustained commitment to your tutees by being reliable, punctual, and organised every week.

Most tutoring takes place during the school day (8am – 4pm) inside the school building, and during school term times. You’ll need to factor in travel times when applying for assignments, but tutoring is normally held in two to three-hour blocks to minimise this. We expect you to commit to a minimum of three hours of tutoring per week, but you can take on as much work as you like. If you’re only available for evening and weekend work, then it is unlikely that any of our work will be suitable for you.

Grades:

  • To tutor in Primary Maths and Reading, we ask for at least a Grade B/6 in Maths and English at GCSE level.

  • To tutor in Secondary Maths, English, or Science, we ask for at least a Grade A/7 at GCSE level in your chosen subject.

If you have alternative or equivalent qualifications, for example, an A-Level, or a degree (completed or in progress) in your chosen subject, then we normally count this as you meeting our grade requirements. If you don’t meet these grades, but feel you have other relevant experience, please apply but include details of all other experiences you have, including relevant start and end dates.

Joining us

  1. You'll start by submitting an online application, where you'll list your personal details, education and work experiences, and answer some short competency questions and submit a personal statement.
  2. If successful, we'll invite you to a 20-minute virtual interview where we'll ask you about your motivations to tutor with us, and you'll deliver a five-minute role-play in the subject you wish to tutor in.
  3. If we like what we see, we'll invite you to tutor training which consists of 10-15 hours of online content divided into bitesize chunks over a three-four week period. In the meantime, we'll process your DBS and references.

When you've finished your tutor training, provided your DBS and references are cleared, you'll be able to go out in the classroom and start transforming lives! You'll be able to apply for assignments using our online booking portal.
