the back of two students heads, working on a school task

Let me tell you about Kal…

Kal is a self-proclaimed metalhead. At 15, he already has many strings to his bow; he builds computers, designs computer games, and is a self-taught ‘dark techno’ music producer.

Let's hear about Kal...

His maths tutor, Cailum, who is a fellow metalhead and gamer with a master’s degree in physics and a PGCE, showed Kal that professional game designers use trigonometry all the time. Cailum, who is in a rock band, even brought his guitar to one of Kal’s tutoring sessions. He used beats and bars to help Kal finally master equivalent fractions!

Before having Cailum as his tutor, Kal had missed out on most of secondary school; the nature of his autism meant that he had struggled to connect with some schoolteachers and other pupils. It was finding the right tutor for Kal that helped him make a huge breakthrough.

Kal started to enjoy education again. He realised that some topics he’d missed in maths were key to his interests, and he was excited to learn so that he could be a better music producer. Kal was proud to reflect on the progress he was making and even requested to be entered for the maths GCSE!
