Why support Tutor Trust?

We believe that every child deserves access to an education system that provides excellence, equity and opportunity regardless of their family income. Young people from families with low income in areas of the north have been found to finish secondary school on average 21.3 months behind their wealthier peers (EPI). By comparison, the gap in London is just 5.7 months. We know that high-quality tutoring can play a pivotal role in reducing this gap.

If, like us, you care about making a change to combat inequality in education, you have the option to make a difference. A gift from you will allow our tutors to reach more young people who need our support. Tutoring could make the difference that improves a child’s confidence, as well as progress and attainment.

Tutor Trust is unique as a tutoring charity. Our model is evidenced by the positive outcomes of two independent randomised controlled trials funded by the EEF, which evidence the effectiveness of our tutoring in building relationships as well as its impact on attainment. Outcomes of these impact studies showed tutoring helps young people to make measurable and accelerated academic progress.

Let me tell you about Kal...

From our pupils

For Year 11 pupil Ben* - not his real name - who earned a Grade 4 pass in his GCSE exams, it was his tutor Andrew who fired up a love of numbers!  He said:

I’ve been able to correct my mistakes. Having a tutor that isn’t dull and boring also plays a big part, so a big thanks to Mr Hope as he actually makes me want to do better in maths.”

How much should I give?

Anything you can afford will go towards supporting young people through tutoring. Your donation won't be restricted to a single project but will be used wherever it's needed most to support young people through tutoring, for example:
  • £ 30

one-off donation could help to fund a tutoring session like Kal’s for 4 young people

  • £ 112

could help us to fund a child’s entire 15-hour tutoring programme, giving them the vital support they need to succeed

  • £ 5

a month could help us give a child like Kal consistent tutoring every month

From our tutors

One of our award-winning English tutors, Kerry O’Malley, got her BA in Primary Education at London South Bank University and was the Pupil's Choice Tutor in Manchester in 2024. She told us about one of her favourite experiences:

"My best moment would be when one tutee told me about a time in their class when they were able to answer an assessment question because they remembered working on that topic in tutoring. She said the rhyme we came up with together stuck in her mind, so she was able to use it, and it made her feel more confident knowing she had got that question right.”

From our schools

Scott Fenner, Assistant Principal and Head of Sixth Form,Ormiston Bollingbroke Academy told us:

"Tutor Trust worked closely with us to ensure we identified the students we wanted to put forward, and then worked closely with subject teachers to ensure they had an overview of the topics that students were underperforming in, which then formed the basis of the sessions. From the beginning, Tutor Trust was great with organisation and getting the programme set up. The tutors were organised, professional and were able to build a rapport with the students straight away, getting them engaged in a subject they were originally struggling with."

How will you spend my donation?

As a charity, Tutor Trust is not-for-profit; any income we receive goes to our operational costs and directly to young people from low-income backgrounds. We aim to keep our costs as low as possible, to ensure that the highest portion of your donation funds real tutoring sessions.

Some common examples of our operational costs include:

  • Paying our tutors, so that they can plan the most engaging lessons and be consistent for the young people they work with
  • Working on the ground with schools, colleges, alternative provisions or parents and carers to provide a smooth set-up process and consistency for each young person
  • Advocating on a national scale for educational equality
  • Quality assurance, our team of qualified teachers is dedicated to ensuring that each tutor is highly trained and able to provide impactful tutoring sessions
  • We take safeguarding seriously; each of our tutors goes through an enhanced DBS check, and we follow safer recruitment procedures to ensure that our young people are safe in tuition sessions
Thank you for your support. Because of the generosity of our supporters and partners, more than 44,000 young people have gained access to a tutor. This life-changing impact would not be possible without the generosity of people like you. Together we’re helping secure brighter futures for the next generation.”
Abigail Shapiro, Co-founder and Executive Director of Tutor Trust
