We have been partners with Trinity High School consistently since 2012 and are delighted to be continuing with them again this year.

About our partner school

Founded in 1984, and celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Trinity is a large multi-cultural school in the heart of Manchester's university district.

The school receives pupils from around 100 primary schools each year, and prides itself on creating an atmosphere of belonging and security, where students and staff can flourish and where those who need it have targeted support.

In his welcome to the school, Head Julian Nicholls says that they are:

“Passionate about excellence in education, and giving students the very best start in life with a firm belief that inspired teaching transforms lives.”

Our work together

Since we first collaborated with the school, our dedicated team of tutors have worked alongside more than 300 young people, across all Year groups, to help them build their attainment and confidence in Maths and English, sometimes for both subjects.

We have also worked with several cohorts of gifted mathematicians, to nurture and develop their love of the subject as part of our specialised Axiom Maths (formerly MESME) Maths Circles programme.

As with all the schools we work with, so that we continuously improve our programmes, and tailor each session to the individual pupils’ needs, we measure each pupil’s ability in a subject at the start and end of a programme. And Trinity’s pupils made excellent progress in all areas last year.

The average across all cohorts was 9.42 percentage points of progress with the Year 9 Maths group making an impressive 18.75pp of progress and the Year 9 English group 11pp.

Pupils have been positive about the experience of tuition and their enjoyment of it.

Loved it all! I don't have a favourite moment."

We learn stuff that we do in our maths lessons later on so I already know the topic when we go through it."

A number of tutors have worked in the school over the years, with several working in the classrooms at any one time.

Amber Barrow, a History student at the University of Manchester, has tutored with us for three years, delivering 377 hours of tuition in that time, and has experience working with a range of primary and secondary partner schools. Amber supported Year 9 pupils with English at Trinity High last year. Having a strong partnership with the school is vital, she believes.

I think spending time getting to know the students is crucial, and I also think feeling welcome in the school community is helpful to making you the best tutor you can be."

Assistant Headteacher Emma Kirkham is supportive and a champion for our work.

In five crucial measures, including tuition had a positive impact on student attainment, enjoyment of learning, and student confidence, Emma scored us an average of 4.4 out of five.

The tutors have excellent subject knowledge but can adapt their delivery to ensure that all pupils understand the tasks set. The tutors have successfully supported pupils with different skillsets, including those who are new to English. Their lessons are carefully planned and we always have initial meetings so that the work that the tutors deliver is linked to our curriculum maps.

"The best thing about working with Tutor Trust? Forming relationships - the tutors as role models."
Emma Kirkham, Assistant Headteacher, Trinity CofE High

2023/2024

Our tutors are currently working with 65 pupils, across Years 7, 8, and 9 in English and Maths.
