For young people

If you're receiving tutoring with Tutor Trust, this page is for you! Find out how to make the most of your tutoring sessions and what you can do at home to further boost your learning.

Whether you're just about to start working with your tutor, or you've been receiving tutoring for a while, this page has all the info you need to help you get the most from your tuition sessions.

Want to get the most from your tutoring programme? Here are some top tips.

Attend as many sessions as possible

15 sessions might sound like a lot, but believe us when we say that once you start your programme the time will go really quickly! The reason our programmes are 15 sessions is because that's how many are needed to make three months' worth of progress. We really recommend that you try to attend every session so that you can get as much support as possible.

Ask questions!

Many pupils who have received tutoring in small groups tell us that they feel that it's a safe and non-judgmental space to ask questions. Asking your tutor for more information on a topic or to clarify something will help them to make sure that you're getting the support you need.

Be honest

We run a Pupil Voice survey to make sure that our tutoring is as good as it can be. This is your chance to tell us what you'd like to get from your tutoring, what you enjoy and what you'd like to change. We really want to hear what you think, so please be as honest as possible in your answers.

Come with an open mind

We understand that you may not have chosen to receive tutoring from us and it might be something that you're not really looking forward to. However, our secondary learners scored their tutoring sessions 8/10 for enjoyment, while our primary pupils scored them 9/10. We encourage you to go into your tutoring programme with an open and positive mind as we're confident you'll get a lot from it.

FAQs

You might have questions about how tutoring works, what to expect and how to get the most from your programme. Below are some FAQs which may help:

If you've been selected to receive tutoring from us, then that's great news - it means that your teacher has seen that you have the potential to do well in a subject, with some additional support from us. We can help you with certain areas of a subject that you might be struggling with, or practicing with test or exam style questions.

Usually, you'll be taught in groups of 3 with 1 tutor. This means that you'll be able to get plenty of time to work with your tutor on specific areas and to ask questions in a safe and non-judgmental space.

If you're receiving Tutoring Plus, your tutor will work just with you to make sure that you're getting the support you need.

Tutoring sessions will take place in school. If you are receiving Tutoring Plus, your tutoring may be online.

Usually, our tutoring programmes are 15 hours, usually with an hour-long session taking place every week. To get the most out of the tutoring, we recommend that you attend every session.

So that we can make sure we're helping you with the areas you need most support with, we'll ask you to complete a short multiple-choice test at the beginning of your programme. We'll then ask you to do a similar test at the end of the programme so that we can see how much progress you've made.

Our tutors are usually students at local universities, trained by us to tutor in particular subjects. When they first join Tutor Trust we help them to make their sessions as fun as possible, so you don't have to worry about getting bored!

I've enjoyed every bit of it. Miss has pushed me and Miss and Tutor Trust should be very proud."
