Supporting our tutors to be their very best

Learning is in our DNA here at Tutor Trust.

For us to ensure that every hour of tutoring is as impactful as possible, it’s important that everyone on our team has opportunities to learn and grow. We’ve worked hard to develop a culture of continuous growth and development for our colleagues and our tutors alike.

For colleagues, our learning opportunities come in the form of well-being benefits and an annual individual training budget to access courses for personal and professional growth.

And for our team of tutors, the high-quality training they receive at the outset of their career with us is just the start of an almost-limitless learning journey!

After successfully completing training, new tutors have access to a range of support including our peer mentoring programme, one-to-one sessions with our Tutor Engagement Manager, Ellie, coaching opportunities with Quality Manager, Jeni, face-to-face drop-in sessions, and our Guild online community. In addition, on our fantastic online learning and development platform Thinqi, tutors have access to tutorials and CPD opportunities to hone their tutoring skills and prepare for their future careers. And, best of all, all these opportunities are FREE!

Tutor development opportunities over the last few months have included CPD sessions on GCSE Maths, English, and Science for those supporting Year 11 pupils, a session on the importance of building strong relationships, and tutorials on preparing for a first assignment, supporting well-being, and improving literacy during tuition, as well as dozens of others.

Alongside our qualified teaching staff, external experts also lead CPD sessions, and these include former tutor Shaun Barton, now Course Director of KS5 Mathematics at Trinity CofE High School, Manchester, and Liz Birchinall, Programme Director Primary PGCE at the University of Manchester.

Our tutors have rated all sessions over the last year as either ‘good’ or ‘excellent’.  One wrote after Shaun Barton’s session on GCSE Maths: “Shaun was very easy to listen to and explained things brilliantly!  I cannot think of anything that I won't take away from this.”

We want our tutors to have the tools they need to not only accelerate the impact their teachings have on their tutees’ academic performance and lives but for their own development too.

“We’re creating a community for tutors to share their experiences, and learning, with each other. We even developed our own podcast, Tutorcast, so that our tutors could listen and learn on the go!”
Matt Wallis, Tutor Trust’s Director of Training and Quality Assurance

Tutor Justine, who worked in education for more than 20 years, is enjoying the opportunities to continue to develop her skills.

Every email contains positive and complimentary language that makes me feel valued and appreciated and that I am doing a good job. I have learned so much and the Tutor Trust CPD is incredible. The tutoring and peer mentoring are extremely rewarding and it is wonderful to feel part of such an amazing team. My family says that I am a completely different and happier person since I started working for Tutor Trust – long may it continue!”
Justine Hardisty, Tutor, West Yorkshire

The next CPD for tutors is with Liz Birchinall on Tuesday 28 March at 4pm-5pm.  ‘Lighten the Load –  smarter learning with cognitive load theory’, will help tutors discover how to make tuition more impactful for their tutees. Tutor Trust tutors can find more information and book a place on the Zoom session through the Thinqi platform.
