You may be here as you're looking to become a tutor with us, or you've passed your interview and completed your training (in which case, congratulations!).

As you’ll be self-employed when working with us as a tutor, you will now need to register for a self-employed tax number. It sounds intimidating, ut is actually easier than you think. The HMRC website is easy to use and the process is simple and straightforward.

You'll need to register on the HMRC website, then fill in your personal details including your name, address, date of birth, and National Insurance number.

  1. Under the heading ‘If it’s your first time registering’ click on ‘Register through your business tax account’.
  2. Enter your email address where you’ll be sent the confirmation code needed to create an ID and sign in.
  3. After you enter the confirmation code, you’ll be asked for your full name and to create a password.
  4. You’ll receive a Government Gateway ID, which will also be emailed to you. It’s a good idea to save the email as you’ll need your Government Gateway ID every time you sign in.
  5. Click on the ‘Continue’ button. You will be asked to set up a two-step login for security purposes. You can choose from text, voice call and Authenticator App.
  6. From here you will be taken to a page that says ‘You have not added a tax to your business account’. Click on ‘Add a tax, duty or scheme now’.
  7. From here, click on ‘Self Assessment for individuals, sole traders, partnerships or trusts’.
  8. Under ‘Which of these best describes you?’, choose ‘Individual or sole trader’.

You’ll receive a confirmation email, and you'll be up and running as a self-employed individual. Now you’re ready to log onto Connect, find your first assignment, and start work as a tutor!

If you need any support with starting your first assignment, get in touch with Ellie Cross, our Tutor Engagement Manager.
