Tutor faces 2 pupils in a classroom

GCSE revision and pre-SATs writing workshops: Tuition makes learning fun over the Easter break!

The Easter holidays offered more than just a break from the classroom for pupils across Manchester and Merseyside this year. Hundreds of pupils took part in engaging tuition programmes.

This Easter break, Tutor Trust successfully delivered six holiday programmes across our partner schools in Manchester and Merseyside, supporting pupils from Year 6 and Year 11.

These holiday tuition sessions provided targeted support for young people who need it the most. We know that children from low-income backgrounds are leaving secondary school on average 19.1 to months behind their peers across the UK and up to 21.1 months behind in the regions we serve. We believe that the flexibility of tuition allows us to create an impact in a short space of time, focused on building attainment, confidence and resilience.

Our holiday programmes are bespoke and designed to boost confidence, strengthen core skills, and create positive learning experiences in a supportive and engaging environment.

In Merseyside, our tuition provided support to young people from Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy, Notre Dame Catholic Academy and St Francis Xavier's Catholic Academy. And in Greater Manchester, young people at Manchester Enterprise Academy Central and St John's CofE Primary School (photographed in this blog are Pre-SATs SPaG and writing workshops, which supported young people to improve literacy ahead of milestone SATs exams) took part in high-impact sessions. In addition, we worked alongside educational charity, IntoUniversity, to provide tuition as part of an Easter Club at their Salford centre. Here, pupils were supported in the run-up to their SATs exams with a series of interventions provided by IntoUniversity alongside Tutor Trust.

it was the highest quality programme IntoUniversity has ever had, because of Tutor Trust’s tutors.”
Jess Smith, IntoUniversity’s Salford Centre Leader

Across six schools, our experienced tutors led sessions in 3 foundational areas of learning: maths, English literature and literacy, including spelling, punctuation, grammar and writing. Lessons were carefully designed by our tutors for SATs and GCSE revision. Our small group sizes allowed for learning environments in which pupils could ask questions and build confidence at their own pace. We introduced regular breaks and games to keep the pace of the sessions varied so that young people felt rewarded and enjoyed their tutoring. We were happy to see this style of tuition taking place when we were on site to oversee the great work of our tutors.

Our staff team and tutors worked closely with school staff in the run-up to the Easter holiday; everyone involved in the organisation and planning of the Easter programmes was committed to ensuring that children were supported to make progress academically, as well as excited to participate. Encouraging young people to attend school over a school holiday is not an easy task, but our teams have years of experience in delivering holiday programmes. We know that building strong relationships with schools and pupils is the key to the success of in-person tutoring. Feedback from pupils, parents and teachers on the day was positive and highlighted to us the reason that we continue to provide holiday programmes.

The IntoUniversity club has been great! The pupils and staff were all excellent to work with, and the sessions ran really smoothly."
El Adamson, English Holiday Club tutor

As we look ahead, the success of these Easter programmes reinforces the importance of accessible, high-quality tuition both in and outside of term time. We are looking forward to seeing the outcomes of our revision tuition in GCSE and SATs results over the Summer. By recruiting talented tutors and working closely with schools, we continue to help pupils build confidence, stay engaged, and achieve their potential in every school term.
