  1. Become a tutor
  2. How to apply

How to apply

If you’re highly motivated and passionate about wanting to make a difference to the lives of young people, you’ve come to the right place. Training to become a tutor with us is really rewarding; we’ll also support your professional development along the way and pay you generously for your hard work.

The first step to applying is to complete our application form. If successful, we’ll invite you to an online interview. Passing the interview, you’ll have the full support of our in-house team of qualified teachers through a bespoke training programme, tailored to delivering high-quality tuition in small groups. Once you’ve passed your training, you should be ready to tutor with us – providing your references and enhanced DBS check (which we’ll pay for) have been returned.

You can start your application form now or, if you want some top tips on how to ace your application and impress your interviewers, go to our Steps to Success blogs:

Qualified teachers

If you are a qualified teacher (QT) and are successful at interview, we will offer you a fast-track training programme, so you can be tutoring in the classroom within a few days! You can read more about our QT programme here.

We have some tutor vacancies currently open for qualified teachers across our operating cities. You can click below to apply now.

Want to find out more about working with us? Come to one of our information sessions where a member of our Recruitment Team will be happy to help answer any questions you may have.

Alternatively, please email [email protected] if you have any questions about our application process, and we'll get back in touch with you as soon as possible.

There are six stages to our interview process - to find out more just click below.

Stage 1 - Online application form

Expand

Find out more about how to ace your interview and impress your interviewers in our Steps to Success blogs!

The application form begins by asking for personal details, qualifications and experience (read more about how to ace it in our Steps to Success blog). Please note, you need to be eligible to register as self-employed in the UK in order to be able to apply to tutor with us.  Therefore, if you are on a Tier 4 student visa, you will not be able to tutor with us as you cannot register as self-employed.

We look for specific competencies throughout our application process, which we ask you to demonstrate in the form. We also ask you to provide a short personal statement and two referees (one academic and one personal). We would like you to tell us about your experiences such as paid work, extracurricular activities and/or volunteering. No previous tutoring/ teaching experience is required. However, if you do have experience with children or young people, please ensure you highlight this on your application form.

Double-check your contact details and spelling throughout. Additionally, we would always advise you to save your application regularly to prevent you from losing your work.

You can watch videos from two tutors, Matt and Madeehah, who were interviewed in December 2020 and early 2021 about the application and training processes.

Stage 2- Interview

Expand

Find out more about how to ace your interview and impress your interviewers in our Steps to Success blogs!

If your application form is successful, we will send you an email invitation to interview. We interview for new tutors roughly once a month. The interview will last no longer than 20 minutes, will be conducted by two members of the Tutor Trust staff, and will take place online so make sure you have access to a device with a camera and microphone. The interview consists of three formal questions and then you will be expected to deliver a pre-prepared five-minute lesson. The five-minute lesson will be planned around a question that we will send you a few days before your interview (read more about the role-play task in our Steps to Success blog).

You will also need to provide two forms of identification (e.g. passport and driver's licence), as well as a proof of address (e.g. bank statement) issued in the last three months. This is important documentation that we need to see before we apply for your DBS check. We will also ask you to send images of your GCSE (or equivalent) certificates to us via email.

Stage 3 - Training

Expand

All successful candidates will need to complete 10-15 hours of online training before they are able to start tutoring. Training is led by qualified teacher trainers who will thoroughly brief you on the national curriculum and equip you with the skills you will need to plan engaging tuition sessions.

Online training consists of tasks to be completed remotely, as well as live sessions held over Zoom.

You can find out more about the training we offer here.

Stage 4 - References and DBS Checks

Expand

In line with our safer recruitment policies, we need to receive both the references that you provided on your application form before you can tutor in schools. Please make sure that you have emailed us your DBS documents and that you have contacted your referees to let them know they should be hearing from us soon. We will apply and pay for your DBS after you have completed training, and it is essential that you have a DBS before you can begin tutoring.

Stage 5 - Congratulations - you're now a tutor!

Expand

Once you have completed your training, you have your DBS and we have received both of your references, you can start to make a difference as a tutor with The Tutor Trust!

We will send you an email with your login details for our online assignment booking system, Connect. We’ll show you how to use the system so that you can sign up for your first assignment and then it’s over to you! We advertise all of our assignments on Connect, including all the details you need – where the school is, what the pay is, and when it will take place.
