With more than 1 million young people in the UK now not in education, employment or training (NEET), rising NEET rates are a growing concern for young people, communities and the wider economy. Following the interim report on Young People and Work, we highlight the links between attainment, absenteeism, disadvantage and future outcomes. We explore how tutoring can support young people to stay engaged in education, improve attainment and build confidence.

Tutor Trust recently participated in a pilot study funded by the Education Endowment Foundation, which explored the impact of tutoring on post-16 learners resitting their GCSEs. The study produced encouraging results, demonstrating that tutoring can significantly enhance both academic attainment and learners’ attitudes towards education. It also highlighted key lessons around effective implementation, particularly the importance of strong partnerships with colleges to boost engagement and maximise impact.
We are proud to share that our Co-Founder and Executive Director, Abigail Shapiro, has been awarded an MBE for services to education, recognising her significant contributions to tackling educational inequalities and the difference Tutor Trust is making in improving outcomes for young people.

In total, the six tuition programmes reached 377 pupils and sessions were delivered by 28 tutors across 6 educational providers
Tutor Trust has conducted an internal analysis of how we support pupils with SEND, what we could learn from our data and how we could better represent these pupils in our advocacy efforts. Recent government announcements on SEND system reform in February 2026, included an extra £4 billion to fund new and existing support, as well as a restructured EHCP process.
Tutor Trust reflects on the Government's long-awaited Schools White Paper has been released, detailing their strategy to create a more equitable school system. With a focus on tackling the SEND crisis and raising the attainment of disadvantaged young people, the ambitions of this bill are a welcome sign of hope.
